What if...?

It’s been a while since I’ve had a moment to share my thoughts. I think most people believe there will always be more time, but there will never be enough time. So let’s go.

After finishing three novelas last year, I turned my attention back to my first love: music. I went from being a songwriter to being a screenwriter, then a filmmaker, then an author, and back to being a songwriter. In a way, I feel I’ve come full circle. But each discipline has informed the others, allowing me to keep building and expanding my skills, all of which rely on the ability to imagine. This is something I’ve never had trouble doing.

So, let's talk about imagination. If I ever get stuck on something, I remind myself that there are countless ways to look at any one thing: externally, internally, spiritually, emotionally, metaphorically. The list goes on and on.

Also, for me, at least, I have always lived in two worlds: I was born in the U.S., but I have lived nearly half my life in Japan. This has given me not only two perspectives, but two sets of memories. I always have a well to draw from when I need inspiration.

The point of all this is that each of us is rich with ideas, and ideas can lead to fully realized creative work: screenplays, songs, books, films, paintings, sculptures, musicals, and more. And when you follow through on that work and bring it into the world, amazing things can happen.

So I think today’s prompt is this:

Imagine yourself creating the project of your dreams. Imagine your ideas coalescing and becoming three-dimensional. Imagine how your project might move, inspire, touch, or benefit others. Imagine how it might open doors for you, and allow you to create even more powerful work.

Yes, sometimes it takes time, money, or the stars aligning for projects to see the light of day. But even then, it all starts with you, or you and your collaborators, sitting somewhere and asking, “What if...?”

That’s how I’m starting my day. How about you? (Note: Today is my 33rd anniversary of living in Tokyo, Japan, hence the "Japan-inspired" image! :) )
